Overview
Transforming a focal section of an expansive printed illustrated mural into a seamless, continuous living video window for Reem Mall in Abu Dhabi. Designed for Molin, the installation introduces natural wildlife activity—such as birds in flight and moving elephants—choreographed to conceal behind organic scene geometry without edge cropping or digital frame seams.
The core philosophy was to treat the LED screen not as a rectangular video player, but as a living window into a wider mythical wilderness. We analyzed the visual geography of the printed wall to establish natural entry and exit points—routing animated elephants, birds, and ambient wildlife behind illustrated tree trunks, rock formations, and deep foliage. This guaranteed that no moving subject ever touched the physical border of the display, creating the illusion of infinite spatial depth.
Reem Mall (Abu Dhabi) × Molin
Signature Retail, Leisure & Experiential Mall / Molin Event Production
Reem Mall is Abu Dhabi's signature retail, leisure, and dining destination located on Reem Island, spanning 2.8 million square feet and featuring world-renowned attractions like Snow Abu Dhabi alongside premier global luxury brands. In partnership with Molin event production, Reem Mall commissioned this bespoke media facade installation to blend classical printed environmental storytelling with contemporary digital canvas technology.
Navigating the Complexities
As part of an event installation for Molin, we were presented with a unique challenge: to transform a specific section of a large-scale artwork into a seamless, continuous video experience designed for an LED screen.\n\nThe original artwork was created as a large printed visual, and only a particular portion of that artwork was required to be brought to life in video format. The idea was to introduce subtle, realistic live activities within the illustrated environment — such as birds flying through the forest, an elephant moving through the scene, and other natural elements coming to life.\n\nHowever, the key challenge was not simply animating these elements. Every animated element had to be designed to loop seamlessly and continuously, while maintaining the visual continuity of the original artwork.\n\nSince the LED screen represented only a small portion of the larger artwork, elements moving through the scene could potentially reach the edges of the visible screen and appear artificially cropped. This would immediately break the realism and make the animation feel like it was confined to a digital frame.\n\nTo solve this, the movement had to be carefully choreographed so that animals, birds, and other animated elements would naturally disappear within the environment itself, rather than simply exiting through the edges of the screen. For example, an animal could move behind trees or other elements within the artwork, allowing it to hide naturally inside the scene.\n\nThe goal was to create an experience where the LED screen felt like a living window into the larger artwork, rather than a separate video playing inside a rectangular frame.\n\nThe final animation therefore needed to achieve three key objectives:\n\n* Seamless looping — all animated elements had to return naturally without visible transitions or interruptions.\n* No edge cropping — moving elements should never appear to be cut off by the boundaries of the LED screen.\n* Natural integration — every movement had to feel like it was genuinely happening within the original artwork and environment.
Strategic Execution
Constructed a multi-plane 2.5D parallax environment from the original illustrated assets, separating foliage, trees, mist, and ground geometry into distinct depth layers. Animated wildlife with organic behavioral timing and mapped looping paths that initiate and terminate strictly behind foreground scene geometry. Collaborated on-site at Reem Mall with Molin's technical integration team to calibrate LED panel luminance, color temperature, and contrast against the physical printed paper stock, eliminating bezel awareness and delivering an uninterrupted illusion of life.
